Vlogstar Challenge final showcases the work of aspiring vloggers at BAFTA
For a third year BAFTA opened its doors to host the annual grand final of the Vlogstar Challenge competition.
On the 31 July our fifteen young finalists sat back and watched as their video blogs(vlogs) were played out on the big screen to a packed out theatre at the prestigious London venue.
Scoring the vlogs was a live judging panel made up of key players from the world of film, TV, media and YouTube including actor and screenwriter Noel Clarke and model and activist Mariah Idrissi.
The judges chose twenty-three-year old Munna Sherif from Woolwich as this year’s winner. Her vlog Anxiety, I Own You documented her personal experience of anxiety.
Jim Grice, Head of News and Current Affairs at London Live who sat on the judging panel said:
“One of the brilliant things about YouTube and other social media platforms is that they’re so democratic – everyone has access to them. The Vlogstar Challenge gives young people the opportunity to not only express themselves through video but also develop their technical skills so their work looks good and stands out.”
Watch the evening’s highlights and hear from Munna in a video produced by The Evening Standard:
The Vlogstar Challenge competition and training programme is for aspiring vloggers, age 16-25 from London and Essex. Powered by the Jack Petchey Foundation and Media Trust and run in partnership with YouTube and the Evening Standard, the programme equips young people with the skills to make their own vlogs. Each participant is then invited to upload their vlog to YouTube and enter it into the competition. This year saw a massive 1500 entries.
Trudy Kilcullen MBE, CEO of the Jack Petchey Foundation said “ Sir Jack wants young people to be able to get their views across with positivity and passion in order to change and influence our world for the better, this is why we support the Vlogstar Challenge. We were amazed at the commitment and talent of the young people and we hope the winners will go on to become real leaders, inspiring and motivating other young people through YouTube and other social media.”
