It's Competition Time

The Programme.

Vlogstar Challenge is a unique competition that is now in its fourth season of providing innovative training to 16-25 year olds based in London and Essex. This year we’ve trained over 1,500 young people the art of filming so that they can start vlogging.

This Season.

Its official, workshops for season 4 are truly over, which means that Vlogstar Challenge is now in it’s competition phase - woohoo! During the workshops, the young people who attended learnt technical skills in order to produce impactful and positive content. They were also given opportunities to articulate topics important to them in an engaging way, that are shareable online. With over 1,500 young people trained from September 2018 to June 2019, and a vast amount of vlogs created; this season's content has been captivating to say the least!

Why Vlog?

In this millennial age, where many use their smartphones for a multitude of reasons, there were some young people who weren’t aware of how they can capture content, on their phone without the need for a professional camera. The workshops facilitated by our trainers and the in-house team involved informing the young future video and film makers about the importance of filming landscape. On some platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram most people film in portrait mode. However, in our workshops we specifically focused on landscape as we were using YouTube where most videos are filmed in landscape mode. The young people also developed their filming skills by learning the value of framing, lighting, focus and of course sound! As your footage might look great but if we can’t hear it then it's no good! By learning all these filming fundamentals, they unlocked their superpower skills to create such brilliant content.

From the Vlogstar Team!

Team Vlogstar have had such a thrilling time training our young people and watching them progress throughout the past 9 months. This season has been so exciting! Each of the team members really enjoyed giving young people the opportunity to create content whilst watching them be enthusiastic and passionate doing so. We’ve seen vlogs documenting how life changing dance can be, fast fashion and it’s trends, all the way to foster families, sustainability within the environment and many more. Our content jar is overflowing!

For season 4, Team Vlogstar focused on training more young people based in Essex and revamped the entire workshop and made sure it was updated. We’re so happy to have had the opportunity to train a wider pool of young people from disability and specialty groups (such as dance, theatre, scouts, horse riding youth orgs etc.) As a result, a wide range of topics were covered in all the vlog submissions, the competition is now more stimulating than it has ever been!

Competition Time

As we progress into the competition side of Vlogstar Challenge, we’ve welcomed a new addition to the team; Thabita Luzitu, Junior Project Coordinator. Thabita has expressed that “joining the team of such a creative programme at the start of the competition phase is amazing. I look forward to the events taking place over the summer.”

Good luck to all those who have submitted, the Vlogstar team looks forward to seeing many more vlogs from all of you!

Here are a few inspiring submissions, make sure to check them out...

Sonal showcases her talent and shows us how life changing dance has can be: 'Why walk, when you can dance?'.

Hetty provides us with a powerful poem on sustainability: 'To fix a home, a poem on sustainability'.

Jamey suggest some solutions to avoid spending a ton on fast fashion trends: 'Fast Fashion'.

150 of the best vlogs that we’ve received have been shortlisted for the Vlogstar Challenge Semi-Finals. These selected young people have been invited to join us at YouTube HQ in London for a day of expert masterclasses and workshops in July. After their masterclass at YouTube, the 150 semi-finalists will then submit another vlog and the top 15 chosen from these vlogs will then progress to the final stage.

This final stage includes a production day at YouTube Space in leading up to our Grand Final in September where one young person will be crowned our #VlogstarChallenge champion!
